Psilocybin (magic mushroom) dosing – understanding the basics
Psilocybin (magic mushroom) dosing can be intimidating. Especially if your last experience years ago was an unpleasant one because of poor dosing (eg. the guy at the party saying “here, eat these”).
But it doesn’t have to be like this anymore. These magical fungi are finally getting the credibility they deserve, and because of this we’ve leapt far ahead in our understanding of how to use them safely and effectively. Precision dosing (down to the milligram) means predictable experiences and no surprises.
Here’s an overview of the basic types of dosages:
Microdoses: 50-150mg
These are the smallest, lowest doses you can reasonably take. They’re not designed to make you feel “high” in the traditional sense at all. An easy way to frame it is with something most of us are familiar with—caffeine in coffee. Do you feel it when you drink it? Sure, maybe a little. Would you say you’re “high” on caffeine? Probably not.
That’s a microdose. You get benefits from it, but it doesn’t get in the way of your daily activities in any way.
Low doses: 150-300mg
This level of dose will become more noticeable in the effects you might feel. Still virtually nothing compared to a typical full dose however. What that means is you shouldn’t be seeing distortions in your visual perception (ie. hallucinations). You may feel some change in certain feelings or mental activity, like an elevated mood, or some new ideas, but they should be subtle and not overly distracting.
If you framed a low dose of psilocybin using another familiar substance like alcohol, it might be similar to 1-2 drinks. Starting to feel it, but for most people, still a confident sense of control.
Social doses: 300-800mg
This type of dose will take you into the realm of experience people typically use recreationally. Again to use alcohol as the reference point, this might be like a dinner party where a few bottles of wine are consumed, perhaps some liqueurs, and at some point everyone’s feeling pretty giggly and silly. We’re still not talking about incapacitation or serious loss of control however. We’ve all seen or felt that happen with alcohol, and it’s not pretty. A social dose should be an experience you’d be comfortable sharing with friends or family.
Full doses: 800-4000+ mg
These are the full enchilada experiences. You might hallucinate, and find yourself so immersed you become somewhat incapacitated. This doesn’t mean in a bad way. It just means the experience is so immersive you won’t always be able to focus on all the things around you. Think of a really intense 3D movie or VR experience that has you completely riveted and engaged. Would you want to hold a conversation, or try and cook dinner while in that state? Probably not, as you’d be far too distracted.
At bluemasi we focus on the first two dose ranges, microdoses and low doses. Social doses and full doses are very interesting and we believe there can be benefits to both, but that’s not our particular jam.
Here’s a visual guide to help you understand these dose ranges. Print it out and save it for reference, and of course each bluemasi bar comes with this printed on the inside label for easy reference.
Note: be aware that the above ranges are very general, and there are exceptions to everyone’s individual case. This means a dose that feels low to one person might be a much different experience to someone else. That’s why our mantra is “start low, go slow”. Get a feel for things at the bottom end of the dosage scale, and work your way up gradually.
